I do not use individual municipal bonds as the yield is so low right now.  Instead I buy established closed end funds that are invested in muni's and are at least A grade.  (ie PMA, NXZ, PML, MUA etc)  They pay monthly dividends as opposed to muni bonds which pay every 6 weeks

Depending on the size of the client's portfolio and risk tolerance, I have used a laddered approach (150K per year), however, I usually tend to lean towards funds (open or closed depending on the amount to be allocated)and I prefer doing it in a fee based account.

I use closed end funds for income especially for high income clients with tax concerns.

I utilize Muni Bond Funds for clients in higher tax brackets.  I also utilize state specific muni's.

Only if in SMA or other managed account as part of the allocation model

Ever since Washington public Power I have used only municipal bond funds - some state specific and mix between long and limited term funds.  The best reason to use is that real municipal bond buyers are accumulators and hold for the long term and they generally have an unlimited supply of money.

I am not using municipal bonds. Most of my clients have social security income and the fact that tax free interest can be aded to tax social security makes me look in other directions. Additionally most of them do not have income needs and are focused on portfolio growth

We have started adding muni bond funds to our client portfolio's over the last 3-4 months. The tax exempt yields are currently very attractive based on the price declines they have suffered over the past 12-18 months. We are using both short term (Wells Fargo ultra short muni) and high yield muni bond funds (MFS Municipal high income)depending on the clients risk tolerance, income needs and timeframe.
